Leaving Sand Creek

Bronze sculpture, a tribute to Cheyenne peace chief Black Kettle, by John Bennett, Texas State Artist 2010

Leaving Sand Creek is my tribute to the Cheyenne peace chief, Black Kettle, and his people. The Sand Creek Massacre was an atrocity in the Indian Wars that occurred on November 29, 1864, when Colorado Territory militia attacked and destroyed a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho, including many women and children.
